(+)-schisandrin B is an organic heterotetracyclic compound that is found in Fructus Schisandrae and Schisandra chinensis. It has a role as an antioxidant, an antilipemic drug, a hepatoprotective agent, a neuroprotective agent, an anti-asthmatic agent, an anti-inflammatory agent, an apoptosis inhibitor, a nephroprotective agent and a plant metabolite. It is an aromatic ether, an oxacycle, an organic heterotetracyclic compound and a cyclic acetal. Gomisin N has anti-oxdiant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and anti-hepatitis activities; it produces beneficial sedative and hypnotic bioactivity, which may be mediated by the modification of the serotonergic and GABAergic system. Gomisin N can enhance TNF-α-induced apoptosis by suppressing of NF-κB and EGFR signaling pathways, and potentiate TRAIL-induced apoptosis through ROS-mediated up-regulation of death receptors 4 and 5.
