Irigenin, an α-glucosidase inhibitor, which has anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-metastatic effects. Irigenin can inhibit the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 proteins and mRNAs without an appreciable cytotoxic effect. Irigenin displays moderate activity as inducers of NAD(P)H:quinone reductase (QR) in cultured mouse Hepa 1c1c7 cells. Irigenin is a hydroxyisoflavone that is isoflavone substituted by hydroxy groups at positions 5, 7 and 3' and methoxy groups at positions 6, 4' and 5' respectively. It has a role as a plant metabolite. It is a member of 4'-methoxyisoflavones and a hydroxyisoflavone. It is functionally related to an isoflavone.
